OK, I want to edit a bitmap to go in a TIFF file in a Resource folder, so I go digging through Mac OS X to find a bitmap editor. Near as I can tell, there isn't one. Not in the system, or the developer kit, and there doesn't appear to be a functional one (freeware, shareware, or commercial) for less than a couple of hundred bucks. Well, there's Gimp. Which seems a bit of overkill. They expect all developers to fork out $200+ for a copy of a graphic arts tool so they can build icons? Bah, I think I'll convert it to an ASCII XBM and edit it in "vi".

If you don't want Photoshop, Other Icon Editors are available. Costs may vary. You're right, though. There's no general simple image editing software, just like there's no general simple audio editing software, with the OS. If you want to record a sound from the internal microphone, the way I've seen that you're recommended to do this is open iMovie. Whilst a good demonstration of lateral thinking, it's pretty rubbish. Oh, on the subject of having to use iApps, why can't Quicktime export as MP3? Why do you have to save as movie, load it into iTunes and convert to MP3? (Well, probably licensing fees, actually. Even so, can't downloading iTunes install a codec *somewhere* for QuickTime? Please?)

Unfortunately, it wouldn't appear to be an icon editor. You're expected to have a separate program for that. There's also a program in the examples called "Sketch", but it's a structured object editor, it doesn't seem to have any bitmap support. > If you don't want Photoshop, Other Icon Editors are available. Costs may vary. Thanks for the idea, I'll check out what I find. There's a couple that look like they might do the trick, though I'll probably need a separate program to convert from TIFF to ICON and back again. AUGH. I can't really hate an icon editor for refusing to work on anything but square images, but as it happens I really need to be able to edit 11x3 and 11x6 TIFFs and keep them that size ... so I'll stick to hating Mac Paint.

Have you tried GraphicConverter? <http://lemkesoft.com/en/graphcon.htm> US$30 shareware.

No, I can't imagine why not, with that name it's *obviously* an editing/paint program. :) That brings things down from "outrageous" to "have to convince SWMBO" level. Half way there. I'd still rather pay 1/3 the price for 1/10th the features.

Ben Hyde had an interesting thing about that not long ago: http://enthusiasm.cozy.org/archives/000225.html Does hating software prices count as software hate? - ask
